From the Can

Modern Masters was the first USA manufacturer of acrylic Venetian Plaster, which has been used by professional applicators and do-it- yourselfers on thousands of projects across North America. Venetian Plaster is a finishing technique using thin layers of plaster applied with a spatula or trowel and then polish to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. You can control the sheen level of the finish by simply sanding until the desired sheen is obtained. The more you polish, the more translucent the finish becomes, re- creating the translucency found in real marble. The finish becomes so smooth it even feels like real marble. By varying the color, application technique and the amount of polishing, other finishes can be created including stone, worn leather and suede.

Venetian Plaster Tint Base is short- filled to allow for tint. Off-White or pastel colors can be achieved. To determine the proper amount of tint color to be used, refer to the color formula for a typical pastel paint base. Do not exceed 8 fl. oz. of tint per 120 fl. oz. (236 ml/3.55 L). To create dark and ultra-deep colors, use ModernMasters Venetian Plaster Ultra-Deep Tint Base (VP200 ).

The surface should be free of imperfections, sealed with an acrylic primer- sealer and have a low sheen. If it is not, fill cracks and nail holes, then seal with a primer-sealer. We recommend Zinsser’s Bullseye® WATER-BASE. (Hint: tint the primer-sealer to a color similar to the color chosen for the Venetian Plaster).

Step One – Skim Coat: Apply a skim coat of

Venetian Plaster with a trowel at a low trowel angle (2 finger space) and scrape off excess at a high trowel angle (3-4 finger space). Let dry 1 hour.

Step Two – Texture Coat: Apply a texture coat of Venetian Plaster with a low trowel angle and light pressure using a skip trowel technique. “Knock down” any peaks created by lightly smoothing with a low trowel angle. Let dry for 1-2 hours.

Step Three – Skim Coat: Repeat the process done in step one and let dry for 1 hour.

For suede and stone looks, polishing is not needed.

For a marble-like finish, sand the dry Venetian Plaster in a circular motion with 400 grit dry sandpaper (a palm sander can be used). For a higher sheen, dust off with a damp soft rag and sand with 600 grit dry sandpaper. Dust off with a damp soft rag. After being polished, Venetian Plaster should be treated with care. It is not scrubbable, but it is easily repaired.

To provide protection and washability in bathrooms or high traffic areas, after sanding with 400 grit sandpaper, apply Modern Masters Venetian Plaster Clear Topcoat. This trowel applied clear protective sealer is intended for high traffic areas where washability is imperative or for rooms that experience high humidity. Also available in a decorative translucent pearl or gold topcoat. Other protective topcoats are not recommended for use over our Venetian Plaster as they may diminish the illusion of depth and texture.
